Delorean’s Alpha 5 is not looking back

This gorgeous machine is the Delorean Alpha 5 EV designed with a balance of luxury, style, and performance.

About the only thing it borrows from the original are the louvered rear window, gullwing doors and an homage to the finned wheels. Everything else is a clean sheet. Gone are the angles and cuts of its predecessor. In their place are softened but aggressive lines in a bid for aero efficiency.

Performance should be an improvement over the original too. According to Delorean Motor Company, the Alpha 5 will launch with a range in excess of 300 miles, a dead-to-sixty of around 3 seconds, and a top speed nearing 155 mph.

Getting into the four seat coupe is aided by the rather large gullwing doors. Two doors for a four place car. It’s not possible to tell if this is a 2+2 configuration, or a proper four seater that can accommodate full size adults in the back. My guess is the former. Either way, those doors look amazing. What I just can get my head around is how they are capable of meeting roll-over safety standards, and still be light enough to lift (power assisted maybe?).

Two things you won’t find on the spec sheet? A mirrored glove box and a Flux Capacitor. And, while I can’t confirm this, I would argue that there is no promise of a fusion based propulsion system on the horizon — this one is battery only.

I can’t wait to see these on the road. But before it lands on the streets, the Delorean Alpha 5 will make its debut at the 2022 Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance.
