Scientific America reports that in the seven months of 2024, solar and wind energy combined, generated more power than coal based on U.S. Energy Information Administration data.

A combination of other renewable energy mixes have generated more total power than goal in 2020, 2022, and again in 2023. But this is the first time just solar and wind, combined, generated more power than coal. It is possible that coal may take a slight lead by the end of the year, but the trend is that solar and wind together will routinely generate more power than coal.
